Twelve Junior Girl Scouts from Virginia Beach Troop 394 brought smiles and hope to the pediatric ward at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia on September 1. The girls created 46 “Comfort and Care” bags filled with handmade items including a huggable sock doll, a wooden golf tee game, tic-tac-toe, and a coloring book. The project was a part of their Girl Scout Bronze Award – the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn.

“We did a lot of brainstorming and voting to decide what sort of project we wanted to do and then we really had to work together to get it all done,” said 6th grader Molly Fulton who has learned the importance of supporting the military from her father, a Master Chief in the Navy.

The girls were thrilled to see first hand the impact their project had on sick children. Christopher Brogan, Child Life Specialist for the hospital, not only gave the girls a tour of the pediatric ward but let them visit with a couple of the current patients.

“What you’re doing is taking care of our patients,” Brogan told the girls. “By giving them something you’ve put so much time and effort into, you’re really showing the patients and their families how much you care.”
